Some Myths Die Hard, The TRUTH About Feeding Straight Alfalfa

Sometimes, it is exceedingly difficult to separate fact from fiction... truth from myth. But we must try. Take the feeding of alfalfa to horses for example. Popular opinion has it that you cannot feed straight alfalfa to a horse. Alfalfa is simply too 'hot' and it can lead to colic and founder. Is there any truth to this notion? The answer is NO. The truth is that a good quality pasture is higher in calories and protein than alfalfa hay. In fact, spring pasture grass contains from 20 - 26% protein... far higher than the 16 - 18% protein of alfalfa.
